Window Tinting Laws UK 2026 – What You Need to Know

Understanding UK Window Tinting Regulations in 2026

Window tinting remains one of the most popular vehicle modifications in the UK, but it is essential to stay on the right side of the law. At Shady Tints in Croydon, we help customers across South London make informed decisions about their tinting options every day.

What Are the Legal Limits?

The law in England, Scotland and Wales is straightforward. The front windscreen must allow at least 75% of light through (known as VLT, or Visible Light Transmission). The front side windows must allow at least 70% VLT. There are no restrictions on rear side windows or the rear windscreen, meaning you can go as dark as you like on those.

These regulations are set out in the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 and remain unchanged heading into 2026. It is worth noting that factory glass often already has a slight tint, typically around 73-75% VLT, so even a light film on front windows can push you below the legal limit.

What About the MOT?

Window tint is checked during the MOT test. If the front windscreen or front side windows are too dark, your vehicle will fail. The tester uses a light meter to measure VLT. If you have had aftermarket tint applied to front windows and it fails, you will need to have it removed before the car can pass.

Rear Window Tinting: No Limits

The good news is that rear windows have no legal VLT requirement. Many of our Croydon and South London customers opt for a darker tint on the rear half of the vehicle for privacy, UV protection and to keep the cabin cool during summer. Popular choices include 20% and 5% VLT films, which offer excellent privacy whilst still looking sharp.

Can You Get Pulled Over for Dark Tints?

Yes. Police can stop you if they suspect your front windows are too dark. They carry portable tint meters and can issue a prohibition notice on the spot, requiring you to remove the film before driving again. Fines can also apply. This is why we always advise our customers to stick within the legal limits on the front windows.

Our Recommendation

At Shady Tints, we recommend a professional-grade ceramic tint on the front windows that provides UV and heat rejection whilst remaining within the 70% VLT requirement. For the rear, choose whichever shade suits your style. Pop into our Croydon workshop or give us a ring to discuss your options — we are always happy to advise.
